The city of Weed in northern California is on fire. Officials are beginning to assess the damage from a devastating fire that is tearing through the city of Weed. Reducing entire neighborhoods to smoldering rubble, burning the Holy Family Catholic Church, damaging an elementary school and burning portions of the town’s largest employer, Roseburg Forest Products Mill.
The Boles Fire started in a field behind an apartment complex, whipped by strong winds. The winds carried embers that sparked spot fires across the city and burned more than 100 homes and buildings. The fire grew rapidly to several hundred acres, and Cal Fire says the fire is now at 375 acres.
The Red Cross has relocated the evacuation center from the Siskiyou County Fairground to Yreka High School, in Yreka. An additional evacuation center was also opened at Mt Shasta High School, in the city of Mt Shasta.
