Many modern-era Preppers (who used to be called Survivalists) have taken emergency preparedness to the extreme. They’re counting on the fall of civilization to facilitate their world view that humanity is bad and probably should have been destroyed a long time ago. They believe that in the aftermath ‘they’ the Doomsday Preppers will rise from the ashes and take control of what’s left of society. I don’t believe that this dim view of civilization takes into account humanity’s intrinsic good. People do band together to overcome hardships, they do help each other in times of crisis, and they most certainly do give generously to their fellow man.
We at the Go Stay Kit take a much more realistic approach to emergency preparedness. Rather than planning exclusively for the collapse of society, we believe that emergency preparedness encompasses a much broader scope. That although society’s collapse is possible, it’s not really probable.
A better plan would be to prepare for the eventuality that society doesn’t end, but instead soon after a natural or manmade event happens, emergency responders and others will start the healing process. They’ll help those who’ve gone to emergency shelters, and connect with those who’ve stayed in their homes.
Spending your life savings on The End Of The World As We Know It TEOTWAWKI scenario doesn’t measure up to reality. Perhaps a more reasoned approach would be to have a 72-hour Emergency Kit on hand. The inexpensive contents are readily accessible – we’ve posted them on this website many times in the past. It’s also a good idea to have the personal/medical info, and contact/meeting data for your family, friends and neighbors with you. Many of us only have partial information stored in our cell phones – which for a host of reasons is generally inaccessible in times of crisis.
Rather than preparing for The End, preparing for a new beginning would be preferable. You could start by gathering a few simple items for your 72-hour Kit along with your emergency contact/medical info. In this way you would be better prepared than 90% of the American population. You could safeguard the lives of your loved ones, so that you could all begin again.
