I got a very thoughtful email yesterday from Claire K. who has previously lived in L.A., asking how she can get her car prepared for a natural/manmade disaster? First of all Great Question Claire!
There are 2 steps: First make sure your car itself is in good running order, if you don’t know how to…have a mechanic check your brakes, tires, engine, etc. Then get a small inexpensive zipper bag and designate it your “Car Go-Bag.” In it you should have the same kind of items you have in your 72-hour Kit at home. But, make it a “Lite” version. Meaning, just the essentials, for as much space as you have. As a reminder I will publish the 72-hour Go-Bag list again next week, it’s been a while.
However Claire, I don’t believe any of this pertains to you. You are the 1% of Americans that are already prepared. BRAVO CLAIRE. I’m going to contact you and get you a Free Go Stay Kit. If you are all wondering why I say this, the following are the contents of Claire’s Auto Go-Bag!
CLAIRE: “For example, since I realize I may not be at home during an emergency, my car contains: water, snack bars for several days of minimal but vital eating, a small 2-person tent (big enough just for me), sleeping bag, 2 tarps, hat and 3 days change of clothes as well as hygiene items, rope/cord, knife, shovel, heavy duty garbage bags (since you have to poop and bury it somewhere/somehow), basic medical supplies (aspirin, bandages, antiseptics, etc.), As I write this, though, I also realize that I’ve never included a sheet listing contact info for key family/friends near & far to contact about my situation should I require reminders (or someone needs to contact them for/about me – sigh…).”
Remember, emergency preparedness and resiliency are the keys to your family’s safety in a natural/manmade disaster. Be self-reliant.
