Daylight saving time begins on Sunday, March 13. It’s time to turn your clocks forward. It’s also a great opportunity to test your smoke alarms.
Smoke alarm batteries should be replaced once a year, however there is a new style of smoke alarm on the market that has a permanent 10-year battery installed that cannot be removed. At the end of the smoke alarms battery life, you simply throw the entire unit away and buy a new one.
This new style of disposable smoke alarm is especially good for rental units and other applications where it is difficult to replace the batteries once a year.
The United States Fire Administration (USFA) encourages you to check your smoke alarms at least once a month, by pushing the test button on the alarm. More than 2,500 people die in home fires each year in the United States largely due to non-functioning smoke alarms.
