In California, part of a major freeway is closed and mandatory evacuations remain in effect today for homes located in the area of a fire burning in steep, dense terrain 25 miles north of Santa Barbara. Fire officials say the blaze has burned up to 1,100 acres. There are 24 homes lost so far, many more threatened.
