For the past 14 years, Jefferson County Homeland Security in West Virginia has taught “Disaster Ready Kids”, its a preparedness-building curriculum available to local children in registered summer programs.
The teachers say that the kids are very excited to learn about disaster preparedness. The children tend to be most curious about the scariest disasters, and the ones they hear about in the news and in movies. Sometimes they even create their own scenarios—like dinosaurs coming out of volcanoes. The teachers love their enthusiasm, getting the kids talking is a way to get rid of their fears, and prepare them for the real emergencies.
